About Melsmark
Creative Design Rooted in Real Business Experience
Melsmark is a solo creative studio founded by Mel, a Minnesota-based artist and designer with a background most designers simply don't have.
The Name
Where Melsmark Comes From
Long before Melsmark was a real company, it was a logo on the back of a greeting card.
When Mel was young, she made handmade greeting cards for everyone she knew — drawing, coloring, and designing each one by hand. And on the back of every card, she put her mark: Melsmark.
Her grandmother, Deniece, noticed. She looked at those cards and told her: “Someday that will be a real company!”
When the time came to take the leap and start her own studio, Mel didn't have to think long about what to call it. Grandma Deniece had already named it years ago. Deniece had recently passed away, and though she didn't get to see Melsmark officially open its doors, her words were the reason the name existed at all.
From greeting cards to business cards — design has always been the constant.
The Story
How Melsmark Came Together
A Decade in Help Desk & Technical Support
Before picking up a design tool professionally, Mel spent about ten years troubleshooting technology for real people with real problems. That background built a habit that still shows up in every Melsmark project: start with what the user actually needs, then build toward it, rather than starting with what looks impressive.
A Decade Marketing Custom Home Building, Real Estate, and Land Development.
Mel then spent another decade in a custom home building, real estate, and land development operation in Minnesota — handling marketing and design. That meant living inside the exact businesses Melsmark now designs for: knowing what a buyer needs to see in a plat map, what actually convinces someone to call a contractor, and what a small business owner can and can't afford to spend on marketing.
A Working Artist, Not Just a Software Operator
Melsmark's design work is grounded in Mel's own artistic practice. The plat maps and home renderings aren't just technical outputs run through a template, they're hand-finished visual pieces built with the same attention a working artist brings to a canvas. That's the difference between a website that looks templated and one that looks considered.

Built by Someone Who Gets It
There are plenty of designers out there. What Melsmark brings that most agencies can't is real, firsthand experience on both sides of the table — as someone who has run operations, managed budgets, and understands what it costs a small business to say yes to something.
Whether we're building a website for a restaurant, a nonprofit, a salon, a food truck, or a local service business, it's built by someone who knows what it actually takes to run one. When we design a plat map for a developer, we know what a buyer needs to see at a glance. When we create a home rendering for a builder, we know what actually sells homes.
This isn't a big studio with junior designers who've never managed a client budget of their own. It's a solo studio, deeply local — based in the East Bethel and Forest Lake area, serving businesses throughout Anoka County and the greater Twin Cities, with creative services priced for what real small businesses can afford.
